When cooking IS a science…

ikan

Justru krucils dipanggil supaya melihat ikan utuh sebelum diolah.
“What’s that, Ayah?”
“It’s scale…”
“Bahasa Indonesianya, sisik, Mas,” imbuh saya.

Ayah menyisir ikan dengan pisau kasar agar sisik-sisik ikan terlepas. Sementara urusan perbumbuan seratus persen tanggungjawab Si Bunda.
“Cats like fish, penguins like fish, sharks eat fish…” krucils mulai mengoceh.
“What else eat fish?” tanya saya.
“Seal…”
“Oke… What about dogs?”
“No… Dogs don’t eat fish…”
“What do dogs eat, then?”
“Dogs biscuits…”
“What? Seriously???”

“Lah, di (supermarket) Tesco itu khan banyak dijual biskuit untuk anjing…” Ayah terpaksa nimbrung demi menyelamatkan jawaban benar krucils.
“Tapi anjing sendiri sebetulnya omnivora atau karnivora, ya, Yah?”
“Karnivora…”

Sebelum yang dewasa menyambung pembicaraan, Dinara siaran, nyanyi lagu anak-anak Inggris:
One, two, three, four, five,
Once I caught a fish alive,
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
Then I let it go again.
Why did you let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.
Which finger did it bite?
This little finger on the right

“You know, there was a man who was eaten by a very big fish…” saya menyambung pembicaraan soal ikan. “His name is Nabi Yunus…”
“Jonah,” suami sok ng-Inggris.
“Eh, tapi kenapa Nabi Yunus dimakan ikan, ya, Yah?” Emak lemot mulai error.
“Karena nggak sabar terhadap kaumnya…”
Lantaran kurang pede dengan referensi yang dimiliki, terpaksa kisah Nabi Yunus ditunda dulu. Ikan dibumbui, lantas didiamkan. Sambil menunggu bumbunya meresap, krucils diajak jalan-jalan keliling perumahan yang sudah sangat sepi banget. Semua orang berpakaian bagus, duduk di dalam rumah, bertamu atau menerima tamu. Tidak ada toko yang buka sama sekali.

Sebelum ikan dimasukkan oven, Fahdiy berkomentar, “The fish will be hurt, Ayah…”
“No, Mas,” timpal Dinara. “The fish won’t be hurt. The fish is dead!”
Tapi Fahdiy pergi juga dari dapur. Tak tega melihat ikan dioven.

Sehabis makan malam, acara santai. Buka Iqra’ sebentar, dan nonton film masing-masing. Pilihan Bunda jatuh ke film The Hundred Foot Journey. Hahaha. Di salah satu dialognya ada kalimat begini, “Hassan, you have reached the very highest level of quisine. Up here (maksudnya di restoran papan atas kelas berbintang) cooking is no longer an art. It’s a science. At La Baleine Grise, we believe that eating is a multy-sensory experence, and certain combination of flavors and aromas activate enzymes and stimulate specific parts of the brain, evoking pleasure, and also recollections of pleasurable experiences. Like a certain scent will remind you of your first love…”

Wow, langsung teringat dengan pepatah populer dalam dunia masak-memasak, “Cooking is an art, baking is a science.”

So, here they are… The anatomy of fish for preschool, and the very short story about Nabi Yunus alaihi as-salam…

The Story of Prophet Yunus alaihi as-salam

The prophet Yunus was sent to Ninevah.
He became known as the Lord of the Fish (Dhan-Nun).
He warned the people about their evil ways and told them to follow Allah but they would not listen.
Yunus was so angry he left.
He sailed away but the ship was so full and heavy.
Poor Yunus was thrown overboard.
He was swallowed by an enormous fish and he lived in its belly for three days.
Then the fish spewed him out on a shore.
He was very ill but Allah was protecting him.
A plant grew and its leaves protected Yunus from the sun and kept the flies away.
A wild goat provided him with milk.
When he became better he went back to Ninevah and gave the people Allah’s message once more.
This time the people listened and Allah forgave them.
